FIRST KENYAN INDEPENDENT TELEVISION STATION OPENED

Kenya's "first truly independent television station" was opened on 10 December, reports the "The Nation" of Nairobi, Africa News Online, and the International Journalists Network (IJNet) of the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ). The Nation station Channel 42 is an outlet of the Nation Media Group (NMG) which launched an FM radio station only two months earlier. NMG says that "its venture into the electronic media is part of the reforms aimed at ensuring that instruments of democratisation, accountability and transparency are in place." The largest media company in east and central Africa, NMG "consists of Nation Newspapers, Nation Carriers and Nation Marketing and Publishing Co."
