GDF PUBLISHES ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF BOOK ON STATE OF THE MEDIA IN RUSSIA


The Glasnost Defense Foundation (GDF) recently published the English edition of "The Silent Regions", an assessment of "the situation of the mass media and the general state of freedom of speech" in eight regions of the Russian Federation. Written by journalists sent to the regions by GDF, the book compiles reports on the state of the media in Kalmykia, Udmurtia, Bashkortostan, Chuvashia, Dagestan, Altai, Northern Ossetia and Ingushetia. With assistance from Internews-Moscow and the National Endowment for Democracy, "The Silent Regions" was originally published in Russian in 1998.
