AND REMEMBERS JOURNALISTS WHO HAVE DIED

The Journalists' Trade Union (JuHI) of Azerbaijan will mark World Press Freedom Day with a conference on the theme of "Towards Independent Journalism: Problems and Perspectives". Representatives of embassies to Azerbaijan, media workers, politicians as well as human rights activists will be invited. Participants will discuss media freedom in Azerbaijan and abroad, as well as issues of concern to independent journalists, such as police violence and state-sponsored attacks.

JuHI had also planned to hold a street rally and meeting on 3 May in memory of Azeri and international journalists who have been killed for their work. However, on 30 April, Baku City Executive Authorities decided not to allow the rally and meeting to go ahead on the grounds that "the streets will be very busy at that time." JuHI has protested the decision, calling it a "gross violation of the right of people to free assembly." In the last ten years, thirteen journalists have been killed in Azerbaijan, including eleven Azeris and two journalists from the Russian media. Nine of the journalists were killed by Armenian armed forces, which continue to occupy Azerbaijani territories, reports JuHI.
