"BIG CHILL" PANEL, TO RELEASE DEFAMATION CHARTER

ARTICLE 19 will mark World Press Freedom Day by co-hosting an event on 2 May, in co-operation with the Amnesty International Journalists Network and the Freedom Forum, entitled the "The Big Chill: Journalists Who Refuse to be Silenced!" The panel discussion will feature Mulalya Nampito, imprisoned for her work on "The Post" newspaper in Zambia; Mark Chavunduka, jailed and tortured in 1999 for his reporting in Zimbabwe; and Anna Politkovskaya, detained and threatened with rape and execution by Russian troops while investigating events in Chechnya. The event will take place at the Freedom Forum in London, England.

ARTICLE 19 will also release its Defamation Charter, which calls upon governments to remove the offence of criminal defamation from their statute books and take measures to help create an environment where international and domestic freedom of expression obligations are guaranteed in law and practice.
