TO WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY SPECIAL ISSUE

Each year, 3 May is a day to remember and celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, to encourage and develop press freedom initiatives, and to assess the state of press freedom worldwide. It is an occasion to remind governments to respect their press freedom commitments, to increase public awareness of the importance of a free media, and to encourage debate among media professionals on issues of press freedom and professional ethics. World Press Freedom Day is also a time to remember journalists who have been killed while practicising their profession and to support the victims of press freedom violations. In this spirit of solidarity, IFEX members, other freedom of expression and human rights organisations, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) are commemorating World Press Freedom Day 2001 through a wide range of events and activities worldwide.

The IFEX "Communique" will provide special coverage of World Press Freedom Day activities this week and next. The IFEX Clearing House has also created a special World Press Freedom Day page on its website, www.ifex.org. The page includes information in English, French and Spanish on the diverse array of activities and events our member organisations have planned, including international campaigns, joint protests, speaking events, special conferences, and demonstrations.
