WAN FOCUSES ON TERRORISM AND PRESS FREEDOM

The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) will focus on terrorism and its impact on press freedom as part of its 3 May activities. The organisation has released a comprehensive package of materials for newspapers to use. The package features an interview with former Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel, essays from leading journalists including Zimbabwean editor and UNESCO's 2002 Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize-winner Geoffrey Nyarota, cartoons and print-ready advertisements promoting press freedom.

Other highlights of WAN's package of materials include a report on Colombia, the "world's most dangerous news environment," an interview with former Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian, who was jailed in the 1980s as a director of an opposition magazine, on democratic development in China and the role of the press; and an essay by World Press Freedom Committee President James Ottaway on the impact of terrorism on press freedom in democracies. Syrian journalist Nizar Nayouf, a past winner of the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Prize, has also written a personal account of his nine-year imprisonment for promoting democracy in Syria.

"World Press Freedom Day exists to commemorate the sacrifices that journalists the world over are making in the cause of democracy and free speech, and to put new pressure on the violators of press freedom," says Director General Timothy Balding. "With these values under attack in much of the world, 3 May is a welcome opportunity to remind readers of the importance of protecting these rights."

WAN's package is available in English, Spanish, French, German and Russian and can be downloaded from
