NOMINATIONS FOR 2003 GOLDEN PEN OF FREEDOM AWARD


The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) is inviting nominations for the 2003 Golden Pen of Freedom Award, the annual prize which honours an individual or group for outstanding action in the cause of press freedom, reports RAP 21 (African Press Network for the 21st Century).

Past winners of the prize include Argentine journalist Jacobo Timerman (1980), Burmese journalists San San Nweh and U Win Tin (2001), Gao Yu of China (1995), and Vietnam's Doan Viet Hoat (1998). Last year, the prize went to Geoffrey Nyarota, Editor of the Daily News in Zimbabwe.

In September, Nyarota will be the keynote speaker at the IFEX general meeting in Dakar, Senegal [See IFEX "Communiqu%26#233;" #11-31].">http://communique.ifex.org/articles.cfm?system_id=4852">"Communiqué" #11-31].

The deadline for nominations is 1 September.
