AMARC POSTPONES WORLD CONFERENCE

The World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) has postponed its world conference in Kathmandu, Nepal, due to lack of funding and an unstable political situation that has raised concerns over safety.

The conference, initially set to run from 24 to 30 November, will now be held from 21 to 27 February 2003 and will be the biggest ever meeting of community radio broadcasters in the Asia Pacific region, AMARC says.

Despite concerns about Nepal's political situation, conference organisers say they are committed to ensuring a "high quality event in a safe, welcoming and stimulating environment."

As the new dates coincide with the second preparatory committee meeting of the World Summit on the Information Society in Geneva from 17 to 28 February, AMARC says it plans to connect its conference proceedings to the preparatory meeting through a two-way web-cast and release a Kathmandu Declaration outlining community broadcasters' visions for the information society.
