DANIEL PEARL FELLOWSHIP LAUNCHED

The Daniel Pearl Foundation and the Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships (AFPF) have launched a new journalism fellowship in honour of slain "Wall Street Journal" reporter Daniel Pearl to promote press freedom and foster East-West understanding.

The Daniel Pearl Fellowship will award a deserving journalist who "exemplifies the spirit and professionalism of its namesake" with a six-month placement at an American newsroom where they will introduced to all facets of US print media operations.

The winner of the inaugural Daniel Pearl Fellowship will be awarded a placement at the "Wall Street Journal's" Washington, DC bureau. Strong preference will be given initially to applicants from Pakistan, as the aim of the fellowship is to connect journalists from Muslim countries with their American counterparts.

To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must be fluent in English, have at least three years of reporting experience and be employed at a non-governmental publication in their own countries. Journalists from Pakistan applying for the 2003 fellowship must also submit a two-page essay explaining how their career goals match the mission and spirit of Daniel Pearl as a journalist and human being.

The Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships, named after former "Washington Post" managing editor Alfred Friendly, have been awarded to more than 200 journalists from 72 countries since 1983.
