UNESCO TO HOLD SYMPOSIUM ON INTERNET FREE EXPRESSION

The thorny question of whether there ought to be international standards on freedom of expression on the Internet is expected to highlight an international symposium next week in Paris, France.

Organised by the French Commission of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the 15 November symposium will discuss important questions about free expression in cyberspace, including whether limits should be placed on what should or should not be posted online.

Presentations will also examine what role the Internet has played in boosting participatory democracy, as well as the various barriers to accessing the Internet in many countries, including censorship, language issues and economic disparity.

The symposium is being held as part of preparatory meetings in the lead-up to the World Summit on the Information Society, which will be held in Geneva in 2003 and in Tunisia in 2005.
