NOMINATIONS INVITED FOR 2003 JOHN HUMPHREYS AWARD


Rights and Democracy is seeking nominations for the 2003 John Humphrey Freedom Award honouring individuals or organisations for exceptional achievement in promoting human rights and democratic development.

The $25,000 Canadian (US$17,000) award is open to nominees from any country or region of the world. Eligible nominees must be committed to peace and non-violence, and be independent or any political party or government.

Preference is given to those involved in democratic development, women's rights, indigenous peoples' rights and human rights in the context of globalisation. Preference is also given to those working on the frontlines under difficult conditions for the benefit of developing countries.

Applications should include a letter describing the nominee's work and reasons why they deserve the award; a curriculum vitae; articles written by the nominee or other supporting documentation; and references with addresses and phone numbers.
