INDIAN JOURNALIST WINS 2003 ASTOR AWARD

Former Indian journalist Kuldip Nayar has been honoured with the 2003 Astor Award in recognition of his defence of press freedom, the Commonwealth Press Union recently announced.

One of South Asia's best-known journalists Nayar, 76, was jailed during Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's regime for criticising her decision to impose a 20-month state of emergency in the 1970s.

Nayar followed his long journalism stint with a distinguished career as a diplomat and was nominated to the Indian Parliament in 1997. He has also been involved in human rights activism through two local organisations - Citizens for Democracy and South Asia Human Rights (SAHR).
