JOURNALISTS AWARDED 2003 MARIA MOORS CABOT PRIZE

Four journalists, including two from Argentina and Brazil, have been awarded the 2003 Maria Moors Cabot Prize for demonstrating commitment to press freedom and outstanding coverage of the Western hemisphere, Associated Press reports.

Joao Antonio Barros, a reporter for "Jornal O Dia" in Brazil, was praised for his work investigating police corruption in Rio de Janeiro. Raul Kraiselburd, editor of "El Dia" in Argentina, was honoured for reporting on disappearances and other political crises in the face of threats and the murders of his father and son.

Other winners were "Newsweek International's" Mac Margolis for coverage of Brazil and "Economist" editor Michael Reid, who has covered Latin America for 20 years. A special citation for courage and professionalism was awarded to Cuban magazine "La Sociedad de Periodistas Manuel Marquez Sterling." Many of the magazine's staff were arrested and sentenced to prison following a crackdown on dissidents last March (see: http://www.cpj.org/Briefings/2003/cubacrackdown/journ_imprisoned.html).

Winners will receive a US$5,000 cash prize, a Cabot medal and travel expenses to New York for a presentation ceremony on 9 October.
