IAPA INVITES BUSH TO OCTOBER CONFERENCE

The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) has invited United States President George W. Bush to inaugurate its 59th general assembly in Chicago, where hundreds of newspaper owners from across the Americas will gather in October to assess press freedom and regional media trends.

The 10-14 October meeting will also see IAPA sign a formal partnership agreement with the International Press Institute to strengthen co-operation on press-freedom campaigns.

IAPA's Committee of Freedom of the Press will meet on 12 October to present country-by-country reports and discuss IAPA's position on the World Summit on the Information Society. IAPA will also present its 2003 Chapultepec Grand Prize to former "New York Times" columnist Anthony Lewis.
