PHILIPPINE JOURNALIST WINS "ASIAN NOBEL"

Sheila Coronel, the executive director of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ), has been awarded the 2003 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts, reports the Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA).

Coronel is being recognized for "leading a groundbreaking collaborative effort to develop investigative journalism as a critical component of democratic discourse in the Philippines," the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation says. Since its establishment in 1989, the PCIJ has initiated investigations exposing official corruption at the highest levels, including the Supreme Court and the President's cabinet, notes "ABS-CBN News."

Considered Asia's equivalent of the Nobel Prize, the Magsaysay Awards honour Asian individuals and organisations "who manifest the same sense of selfless service" and leadership shown by former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay.
