IFEX MEMBERS TO DISCUSS MEDIA ADVOCACY IN ARAB WORLD

IFEX members will figure prominently among more than 20 international and Arab organisations that are coming together in Morocco to discuss freedom of expression and media advocacy in the Arab world.

The Centre for Media Freedom - Middle East and North Africa (CMF-MENA) is hosting a seminar in Casablanca from 23 to 25 January 2004 to examine ways of meeting new threats to free expression in Arab countries and to share experiences among press-freedom groups and media support organisations.

The seminar will focus on areas where international and Arab groups might engage, including legal assistance for journalists, free expression on the Internet, access to information and journalists' safety.

IFEX members attending the seminar will include Reporters Without Borders, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the International Federation of Journalists, ARTICLE 19, the Egyptian Organisation for Human Rights and the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies. The UN Special Rapporteur on Free Expression, Ambeyi Ligabo, has also been invited to attend.
