IPI TO HOLD ANNUAL MEETING IN POLAND
As Poland prepares to become the newest member of the European Union this year, what press-freedom challenges does it still face in the post-Soviet era? The International Press Institute (IPI) will be looking at this in May when it holds its 53rd General Assembly and World Congress in Warsaw, Poland.
The conference will take place from 15 to 19 May. It is expected to attract participants from more than 100 countries. Panel sessions will examine press-freedom conditions in Poland and other former Soviet countries.
While Poland boasts a vibrant media scene, with more than 300 newspapers and the largest broadcasting market in Central and Eastern Europe, there are accusations of government attempts to silence the press, says IPI. In other former Soviet countries, the situation is more worrying. Violent attacks on journalists are prevalent, and criminal lawsuits against the press are commonplace, IPI adds.
Other panel sessions will cover media ethics, globalisation and media concentration.
