CONFERENCE TO FOCUS ON STATE CONTROL OVER ARAB MEDIA

A conference planned for May 2004 will bring together journalists from around the Arab world in an effort to combat state control over the news media.

Arab Press Freedom Watch (APFW) will hold its third annual conference in Rabat, Morocco. Set to start on 3 May 2004, World Press Freedom Day, the three-day conference will take place with the cooperation of the National Syndicate of Moroccan Journalists.

The conference will include sessions on the different types of state control; restrictions on the media in conflict zones; the case of the Moroccan media; state-controlled media and election campaigns; and discussions concerning the situations in different Arab countries.

APFW also will use the conference to develop a new organizational plan based on connecting 17 existing groups through three regional centres in Egypt, Algeria and Bahrain. The new plan aims to decentralise the groups? work, improve communication among the various organisations, and make their free expression campaigns more effective.
