CJFE INTERNATIONAL PRESS FREEDOM AWARDS

Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is seeking nominations for the 2004 CJFE International Press Freedom Awards, which honour journalists who take great risks, often under dangerous circumstances, to report the news.

Two awards, each carrying a cash prize of CDN $3,000 (US$2,230), will be given to journalists or media outlets who have not won a major press freedom award from another organisation.

The winners will be journalists who demonstrate a commitment to human rights by reporting without bias or prejudice, and cover human rights and other issues from a region or country not often reported by other media.

They have also taken personal risks or suffered physical reprisals because of their work as a journalist.

When making a nomination, please send a cover letter, biographical information on the nominee, samples of the nominee?s work and contact details.

Each award also consists of a framed plaque, which will be presented to winners at a ceremony in Toronto on 17 November 2004.

The deadline for submissions is 31 July 2004.

For further information or to submit a nomination, please contact Julie Payne at CJFE, 489 College Street, Suite 403, Toronto, Ontario M6G 1A5 Canada, tel: +1 416 515 9622, fax: +1 416 515 7879, e-mail: jpayne@cjfe.org; website: http://www.cjfe.org
