HAMBURG FOUNDATION FOR THE POLITICALLY PERSECUTED

The Hamburger Stiftung für politisch Verfolgte (Hamburg Foundation for the Politically Persecuted) provides up to five scholarships each year to individuals from any country to spend one year in Hamburg, Germany, where they can seek respite in a safe environment and carry on their work.

Scholarships are awarded to individuals who have been persecuted for defending human rights in their country through their writings or activities. The foundation does not support political refugees as they are already under a country's protection.

The scholarships provide a monthly stipend of up to DM 2000 (US$1,250) and covers transportation costs and health insurance for participants during their stay in Hamburg. The foundation can also help organise local events for scholarship holders and support campaigns to free political prisoners in other countries.

Since its establishment in 1986, the foundation has provided a safe environment for many individuals, including Turkish and Colombian journalists who were pursued and threatened by right-wing groups; youth from Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire and Burundi who were active in the student and peace movement; and Iranians who were persecuted because of their literary writings or for advocating human rights.
