ALGERIA: THREE JOURNALISTS HANDED JAIL SENTENCES

13 July 2004

RAP21, a network of African editors coordinated by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN), is inviting free-expression advocates to send online letters in support of three jailed journalists in Algeria.

Mohammed Benchicou, Hafnaoui Ghoul and Ali Djerri have been sentenced to jail terms of between two months and two years on charges that include defamation and "violating foreign exchange controls." WAN says the jail terms are part of a larger effort to stifle media criticism of government officials.
