CJFE SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOR PRESS FREEDOM AWARD

Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is still seeking nominations for the 2004 CJFE International Press Freedom Awards. Each year, two awards are given to journalists outside Canada who overcome great odds, including threats or attacks, to report the news.

In assessing nominations, CJFE will look for candidates from regions or countries who report on human rights or other issues not often covered by other media. They must demonstrate a commitment to human rights by reporting without bias or discrimination, and they must show that they have taken personal risks or suffered physical reprisals for working as a journalist.

CJFE will also look for individuals who have not won a major press freedom award from another organisation and who will benefit from international exposure due to the difficulty/threats caused by their work.

The awards are also open to individual media outlets. Individuals and media outlets must be nominated by a non-governmental organisation.

When making a nomination, please send a cover letter, biographical information on the nominee, along with samples of the nominee's work and contact details.

Each award consists of a framed plaque and cash prize of CDN$3,000 (US$2,300). They will be presented to the winners at a ceremony in Toronto on 17 November 2004.

Please send your submissions by 10 September 2004.
