RSF HONOURS PRESS FREEDOM DEFENDERS

An Algerian journalist jailed for exposing government corruption, a philosophy teacher who campaigns to free jailed journalists in China and a crusading Mexican newspaper known for "publishing what other papers don't" have been named the winners of the 2004 RSF-Fondation de France Prize in honour of their dedication to the cause
of press freedom.
Hafnaoui Ghoul, a correspondent for the daily newspaper "El Youm" and a member of the Algerian Human Rights League, was jailed earlier this year for six months after exposing corruption and abuses by local officials. He was conditionally released on 25 November 2004.

Beijing University philosophy teacher Liu Xiaobo, who heads China's Independent Writers' Association, works tirelessly to promote press freedom, says RSF. Despite the risk of arrest, he campaigns to free imprisoned journalists and cyber-dissidents, and distributes human rights information on the Internet.

The weekly Mexican magazine "Zeta" is known for its investigative reporting and courageous editorial positions, RSF says. The cost has been high: three of its reporters have been murdered. Yet, "Zeta" refuses to be intimidated and continues to maintain its editorial stance. RSF says the newspaper is a media outlet that "exemplifies the battle for the right to inform the public and to be informed."

The aim of the RSF - Fondation de France Prize is to focus media attention on press freedom hot spots around the world and to support those who defend free expression on the frontlines. Each winner receives a cash prize of 2,500 euros (US$3,300).
