MARIA MOORS CABOT PRIZES

The Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism is seeking applications for the Maria Moors Cabot Prizes - one of the world's oldest international journalism awards. The prizes recognize distinguished journalistic contributions to inter-American understanding.

The competition is open to any journalist or news executive who works for an organization based in the Western hemisphere; any press association, news service or syndicate that serves such organizations; or any media outlet, including Internet publications. Freelance journalists with extensive experience in the region can also apply.

Three to four medalists from the United States, Latin America and Canada are selected each year. Prize winners receive the Cabot medal and a US$5,000 honorarium, plus travel expenses to New York City and hotel accommodations for the presentation ceremony. Medalists' news organisations receive a bronze plaque.

The jury, which comprises the Cabot Prize Board and the dean of the Graduate School of Journalism, looks for exceptional reporting and evidence of a commitment to important stories over the course of a long and distinguished career. They are particularly interested in hearing about journalists and news organisations that have made a sustained and distinguished contribution to inter-American understanding through their coverage of the Americas.

The Board and the dean are also interested in honouring those journalists who have taken an active role in upholding press freedom in the Americas.

Nomination forms are available in English, Spanish and Portuguese at http://www.jrn.columbia.edu/events/cabot/. Applications should include newspaper or video clips, or copies of books and other material that shows why the candidate deserves to be recognized.
