SEAPA JOURNALISM FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME
The Southeast Asian Press Alliance invites applications for the 2005 SEAPA Journalism Fellowship Programme, which provides opportunities for journalists to do in-depth reporting on how governments, aid agencies and communities respond to natural disasters in the region.
SEAPA says the fellowship will allow journalists to explore how lives and communities have been transformed months or years after natural disasters strike. SEAPA hopes it might also spark ideas on how media should improve reporting on disasters.
The fellowship will begin with a 3-day orientation seminar in Bangkok, Thailand, after which journalists will travel to another Southeast Asian country and spend up to four weeks researching a story of their choice. They will then return to Bangkok for a 2-3 day workshop, where they will discuss their research.
To be eligible for the programme, applicants must be full-time or freelance journalists working in print or broadcast media. They should have at least three years of journalism experience and have some background in writing on social and environmental issues in their countries. Applicants should also have an interest in writing in-depth human interest stories or investigative pieces.
Applicants should submit an essay of not more than 500 words, briefly introducing themselves and explaining their story proposal, along with two samples of their work. Applications must include a letter of reference from an editor, and permission to participate in the fellowship.
The deadline for submitting applications is 25 March 2005. Winners will be announced on 1 April 2005.
