WAN LAUNCHES AWARD FOR AFRICAN NEWSPAPERS
The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) has launched a new award to recognise excellence in African newspaper management - the first of its kind on the continent. Administered by the African Press Network for the 21st Century (RAP 21), the prize honours newspapers which overcome obstacles through innovative management and business strategies.
Newspapers of any size can enter the competition. A grand prize of Euro 3000 (US$3,900) will be awarded to the winner, and two finalists will be awarded Euro 1000 (US$1,300) each.
The winner and the two finalists will be featured in the WAN Newsletter, a publication that reaches over 25,000 national newspaper associations and individual members worldwide. Publicity for the winning newspapers will also be carried through the RAP 21 newsletter and website.
Entries will be judged by a jury made up of leading newspaper experts within the WAN network.
To enter, applicants must fill out a detailed application form clearly outlining the successful management strategy that has led to a concrete improvement in the operation of their newspaper.
This improvement must be quantifiable, such as an increase in circulation due to a specific strategy to attract readership, the creation of an improved distribution system, a marketing strategy to boost readership, an advertising initiative to increase revenues from advertisers, or initiatives to improve staff training and loyalty which have shown a fundamental improvement in staff morale.
A section which clearly states the most pressing problems in each applicant's newspaper market should accompany the submission.
To request an application form, email: rap21@wan.asso.fr
The deadline for submitting entries is 11 March 2005.
