CHILEAN WINS LORENZO NATALI JOURNALISM PRIZE

Juan Cristóbal Fletcher's story about the daughter of murdered Chilean singer Victor Jara has won him the grand prize at the 2004 Lorenzo Natali journalism awards. Fletcher was selected as the grand prize winner out of 15 journalists who received prizes for excellence in reporting on human rights and democracy in the developing world.

Published in the Chilean edition of "Rolling Stone" magazine, Fletcher's story "Blood of a Poet" chronicles Amanda Jara and her family's fight for justice in the killing of Victor Jara, a popular musician who was executed by Chilean armed forces after a coup that toppled the Socialist government of Salvador Allende in 1973. The family's lawyers have launched legal proceedings against former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, whom they accuse of collusion in the murder of Victor Jara.

This year's winners were selected by an independent jury comprised of representatives of Reporters sans Frontières, Amnesty International, Arab Press Freedom Watch and major newspapers and press agencies.

Established by the European Commission in 1992, the Lorenzo Natali Prize for Journalism is awarded annually to journalists from the written and on-line press for outstanding reporting on human rights and democracy.

Awards are given to journalists from five regions - Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Lebanon, Israel and the Arab World. The awards are worth 10,000 Euro (US$13,000) each.
