GERMAN FOUNDATION LAUNCHES HUMAN RIGHTS ESSAY COMPETITION
The Berlin-based Irmgard Coninx Foundation invites young scholars and human rights activists to enroll in an international essay-writing competition whose theme is the universality of human rights.
Essays should explore the question of whether human rights are universal and touch on issues including the necessities of free trade and communication, modern democratic societies and the idea of a common heritage shared between cultures.
The essay competition is part of a new programme at the foundation which seeks to address the social political, theoretical and pragmatic issues facing human rights today.
The authors of the top 20 essays will be invited to an international conference (The Berlin Roundtables on Transnationality) that will be held in Berlin from 4 to 6 October 2005. The Foundation will cover the costs of accommodation and travel to Berlin.
The winner of the best essay will be awarded a three-month research grant to study at the Social Science Research Centre and Humboldt University in Berlin in 2006.
