IWMF PUBLIC HEALTH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME
The International Women?s Media Foundation (IWMF) invites women journalists from Africa and Asia to apply for the Public Health Fellowship Programme, a new initiative aimed at improving coverage of public health issues in developing countries.
Two journalists will be selected for the six-month fellowship, which has two components.
For the first four months, fellows will work with advisors at leading US media outlets to create individualised training plans aimed at increasing their understanding of coverage of public health issues in the U.S. and how editors and producers work with reporters to cover those issues.
For the last two months, fellows will return to their home countries to complete specialised public health journalism projects. All applications should contain a project proposal supported by the fellow's employer.
The competition is open to editors and radio producers from selected countries in Africa and Asia (see:
http://www.iwmf.org/press/8715).Applicants should have at least five years of full-time experience in journalism, including at least three years covering public health issues. Those who demonstrate original approaches to covering HIV/AIDS will receive special consideration. Applicants must be dedicated to a career in journalism and currently employed as either a newspaper editor or radio producer. Reporters are not eligible. Applicants must have the support of their employer to participate in the fellowship and must show a strong commitment to sharing knowledge and skills with colleagues upon returning home. Excellent written and spoken English skills are required.
The deadline for applications is 15 April 2005.
