ALFRED FRIENDLY PRESS FELLOWSHIPS

The Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships invites journalists from developing countries to apply for the 2005 programme, which provides participants with hands-on journalism in American newsrooms.

This year, approximately ten journalists will be selected to spend five months reporting for an American news organisation. Through hands-on training, Fellows will learn practices, standards and values of U.S. journalism which they can adapt and apply in their home countries.

All fellowships are awarded to young print and online journalists from developing countries with an emerging free press. Fellows are selected for the programme based on their commitment to careers in journalism, English language proficiency, journalistic skills, and ability and desire to share what is learned on the programme with journalists at home.

A typical Fellow is between the ages of 25 and 35, has six years of print journalism experience, and has spent little or no time in the United States. Due to the requirements of reporting in the U.S., preference is given to applicants who are proficient in using computers and driving automobiles.

The fellowships include the Daniel Pearl Fellowships, which are awarded to young journalists from South Asia, North Africa and the Middle East. They are named after the former "Wall Street Journal" correspondent who was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan in 2002.

The fellowships run from March to July 2006. The application deadline is 1 September 2005.
