IFLA TO HIGHLIGHT LIBRARIES' ROLE IN THE INFORMATION SOCIETY

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) will be co-hosting a conference in Alexandria, Egypt, from 10 to 11 November 2005 that will showcase the important contributions libraries make in the information society.

"Libraries throughout the world provide citizens with public access to networked information," says IFLA. "With the [adoption] of emerging technologies, libraries seek to facilitate information retrieval more thoroughly, effectively and attractively."

Billed as a "Pre-Summit" to the World Summit on the Information Society, which is being held in Tunis on 16-18 November, the conference will present some of the best practices from libraries around the world in the areas of health, education and training, media literacy, preservation of cultural heritage and disaster preparedness.

The conference will be held in association with Bibliotheca Alexandrina and sponsored by UNESCO.
