LORENZO NATALI PRIZE
Journalists working in print or online are invited to apply for the 2005 Lorenzo Natali Prize, which honours excellence in reporting on human rights and democracy in the developing world.
Administered by the European Union, the prize is named after the former European Commission official who served as vice president of development cooperation from 1985 to 1989.
The prize aims to encourage "quality journalism", which the EU says plays an important role in defending the right to information - a pre-requisite for functioning democracies and for sustainable development.
Applicants must submit one article or an extract of a series of articles on a subject that addresses human rights and/or democracy in the developing world. The article or extract must have been published in print or online between 1 January 2004 and 31 August 2005. Applicants submitting more than one article or an extract of a series of articles will be disqualified.
Three prizes will be awarded in each of the following five regions: Europe (EU countries, countries in Central and Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean); Africa; the Arab World, Iran and Israel; Asia and the Pacific; Latin America and the Caribbean.
Each winner will receive a trophy and a financial award. A Grand Prize for the best article among all regional prize winners will also be selected.
The deadline for entries is 31 October 2005.
