MFWA TO HOST HUMAN RIGHTS COURSE FOR WEST, CENTRAL AFRICAN ACTIVISTS
The Media Foundation for West Africa invites experienced and active human rights defenders from West and Central Africa to apply for a two-week course designed to equip activists with tools for campaigning on media freedom and women's rights.
In partnership with the Center for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University and Amnesty International Ghana, the West and Central Africa Human Rights Institute will be held in Ghana from 13 to 24 March 2006.
The aims of the course are to provide advanced-level training in human rights and development and to encourage regional networking among human rights activists. Training will be provided by local and international human rights experts.
During the first week of the course, workshops will offer skills training in topics including legal advocacy, campaigning, data collection and management, fundraising, monitoring multi-national corporations, and the use of video to monitor human rights. Leading human rights advocates from Africa will also give guest lectures.
In the second week, participants will enroll in workshops focusing on one of two themes: women's rights, and media and development.
Workshops on women's rights will deal with skills women need as social activists in the fields of education, health care and conflict management. Workshops on media and development will provide skills training on access to the media and on promotion of freedom of expression.
The fee for the two-week course is US$500 per week, which includes all meals, accommodation and workshop materials.
At least one fellowship, covering the course enrollment fee and return airfare to and from Accra, will be available for a participant from each country in the West and Central Africa region.
Completed application forms can be downloaded here (http://www.mfwaonline.org/en/updates/details.php?objID=0175) and must be submitted to MFWA between 20 December 2005 and 20 January 2006.
