SWEDISH INSTITUTE TO HOLD SEMINAR ON MEDIA AND DEMOCRACY

The Institute for Further Education of Journalists (Fojo) in Sweden invites experienced journalists from selected countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to apply to take part in a training programme on journalism and democracy.

The programme will be held from 5 to 23 June 2006. It will focus on the opportunities and challenges of independent journalism, ethics and newsroom organization, among other topics.

The programme aims to gather journalists from different social and political backgrounds to scrutinize the media's role in democracy, to network, and to help find solutions for journalism development. Participants will attend workshops, seminars, discussion groups and study visits at Fojo's headquarters in the city of Kalmar. The last four days of the programme will take place in Stockholm.

Twenty journalists with a strong command of English and extensive professional experience will be accepted into the programme. The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) will cover travel and lodging costs for participants.

The programme is open to journalists from these countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Botswana, China, Colombia, Cuba, Egypt, Haiti, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Laos, Lebanon, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Paraguay, Senegal, Syria, Tunisia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

The deadline for applications is 15 February 2006. Applications received after this date will not be considered.
