OXFORD HOSTS MEDIA LAWYERS TRAINING SEMINAR

Lawyers who advocate on free expression and media freedom issues anywhere in the world are encouraged to apply for the 5th Media Law Advocates Training Programme, an intensive three-week seminar which aims to build skills and knowledge in litigation and advocacy.

Taking place from 9-28 July 2006, the programme is hosted by the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy at Oxford University, in collaboration with the Open Society Justice Initiative and other organisations.

The programme is designed for those working in the fields of free expression and media freedom who demonstrate a commitment to human rights, possess a law degree and experience in legal advocacy, and are qualified to work as lawyers in their country. Students or recent graduates are not eligible.

The criteria for selecting course participants includes the applicant's relevant experience and their potential to contribute to the development of media defence litigation or legislative reform in their country.

All participants gain automatic membership in the International Media Lawyers Association (IMLA), a network of lawyers that promotes and defends freedom of expression and freedom of information.
The course fee is £3,500 (US$6,000), which includes tuition, written materials and accommodation at Oriel College.
The Open Society Justice Initiative will be supporting 11 Justice Initiative Fellows from the countries where it is carrying out media freedom and access to information projects. Those who wish to apply to be Fellows should be lawyers working directly or indirectly on Justice Initiative projects, particularly in Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America.

Other applicants are encouraged to contact organisations in their own country to enquire about funding opportunities, or make inquiries about professional development funding within their own workplaces.

The closing date for applications is 14 April 2006.
