AFRICAN UNION NELSON MANDELA AWARD FOR HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS


The African Union is seeking nominations for the African Union Nelson Mandela Award for Human Rights Defenders, which honours an African individual or organisation that has used innovative methods of promoting human rights in the face of great odds.

Candidates must be African individuals, associations, non-governmental organisations or civil society organisations that work to promote and protect human rights in Africa. They must demonstrate that they have risked or suffered harassment or disadvantage for promoting human rights.

All nominations should include: a profile of the nominee's work and his or her contact details; written letters from two nominating individuals or organisations, including contact details; and two references.

The closing date for receiving nominations is 10 June 2006.
