NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR EASTERN EUROPEAN PRESS FREEDOM AWARDS
The Norway-based Freedom of Expression Foundation (Institusjonen Fritt Ord) and the ZEIT Foundation invite nominations for awards aimed at strengthening press freedom and supporting independent media in Eastern Europe.
The Gerd Bucerius Prize "Free Press of Eastern Europe" is awarded annually to newspapers and journalists in Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia and the South Caucasus region who strive to promote press freedom and freedom of expression in the face of threats and censorship.
The Fritt Ord Prize "Free Press of Russia" is awarded to Russian newspapers and journalists who demonstrate the same commitment to press freedom.
Each year, three to four prizes, totaling 40,000 Euros (US$51,000), are given to newspapers. In addition, a special 10,000 Euros (US$12,500) prize is awarded to journalists who report the truth despite censorship pressures and financial difficulties.
The deadline for nominations is 5 October 2006.
