MISSING MEXICAN REPORTER AWARDED IAPA PRIZE

The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) has awarded the 2006 IAPA Grand Prize for Press Freedom to missing Mexican reporter Alfredo Jiménez Mota in recognition of his courage in exposing corruption.

Jiménez Mota, 26, disappeared on 2 April 2005 after his newspaper, "El Imparcial", published a series of articles that linked police in the northern city of Hermosillo to drug traffickers. Jiménez Mota had also been investigating the activities of powerful families in Sonora state who are allegedly involved in the drug trade.

The Grand Prize for Press Freedom will be presented to a representative of Jiménez Mota's family at IAPA's upcoming General Assembly in Mexico City, which will be held from 29 September to 2 October 2006. The award comes with a cash prize of US$2,000 and a plaque.
