INTERNATIONAL PEN TO HOLD REGIONAL CONFERENCE IN HONG KONG

Representatives of PEN Centres across the Asia-Pacific region will be gathering in Hong Kong on 2-5 February 2007 for an International PEN Asia and Pacific Regional Conference that will seek ways to improve cooperation between Centres, strategise against threats to free expression and identify programme priorities.

The conference is primarily for representatives from PEN Centres in the Asia-Pacific region, but representatives from other PEN centres can also attend. International PEN staff and special guests who are not members of PEN will also attend. International PEN is hosting the conference, with support from Hong Kong Chinese-speaking PEN, Sydney PEN and Independent Chinese PEN.

There will be sessions on the development of an International PEN regional strategy, PEN Centre development and management, identification of programme priorities for women writers in the region, development of a strategy to address freedom of expression in the region, and others.

The conference will include sessions that focus on Chinese writers, including "Between Literature and Social Responsibility", "Writing for the Nation: Are Nationalism and Creativity at Odds?", "Internet Publishing in the Chinese World", and "Censorship and Self-censorship".
