WAN TO HOLD 60TH WORLD NEWSPAPER CONGRESS IN CAPE TOWN

The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) will celebrate its 60th World Newspaper Congress, 14th World Editors Forum and trade fair in Cape Town, South Africa from 3 to 6 June.

Kicking off the event is a roundtable on press Freedom in Africa - "The Key to Good Governance and Development" on 3 June.

And despite protests from the China Newspaper Association, WAN will present its prestigious Golden Pen of Freedom prize to Chinese journalist Shi Tao on 4 June. Shi is currently serving a 10-year sentence for writing about restrictions on the media in the run-up to the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. The China Newspaper Association claims the Chinese court "handled the case according to law and made the appropriate sentence" and that the Chinese constitution protects press freedom.

More than 1,500 newspaper publishers, chief editors and other senior newspaper executives are expected to attend the events.
