UNESCO TO HOLD FREE EXPRESSION SYMPOSIUM

To mark the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, UNESCO is holding an International High Level Symposium on Freedom of Expression on 29 October 2008 at its headquarters in Paris.

The symposium will involve heads of state, government officials and policymakers, UNESCO says, plus major non-governmental organisations, World Press Freedom Prize winners and media professionals.

Article 19 of the declaration stipulates that "everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers."

In conjunction with the symposium, a two-day exhibition on Safety of Journalists is being organised in partnership with Reuters.
