The Kurt Schork Awards in International Journalism celebrate freelance and local journalists who show great courage and commitment to reporting on controversial issues in a developing country or nation in transition. The deadline for applications is 22 June 2009.

Two prizes of US$5,000 are up for grabs, one to a freelance journalist covering international news, and the other to a local journalist who shows courage in reporting on controversial issues. The stories can focus on conflict, human rights concerns, cross border issues, or any other issue of controversy in a particular country or region.

The prizes, funded by the Kurt Schork Memorial Fund and Reuters, honour Kurt Schork, a U.S. freelance journalist who was killed in a military ambush while on assignment for Reuters in Sierra Leone in May 2000.

For full details of the awards and how to enter, see the Institute for War & Peace Reporting's website: http://iwpr.net/kurtschork
