Journalists under attack on World Press Freedom Day

Roxana Saberi Members of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) in Paris and London went hungry this World Press Freedom Day - in support of jailed U.S.-Iranian journalist Roxana Saberi, who herself started a hunger strike on 21 April.

Reporter under threat killed on World Press Freedom Day

A Mexican journalist who was critical of local authorities in the northern state of Durango was assassinated on 3 May, World Press Freedom Day, report the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Writers in Prison Committee (WiPC) of International PEN.

Supreme Court strikes down archaic press law

Brazil's Supreme Court has made a "historic decision" to repeal the 1967 press law, which allowed for jail sentences for press offences, report the Associação Brasileira de Jornalismo Investigativo (ABRAJI), the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), ARTICLE 19 and Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Egypt

Government threatens to dissolve EOHR

The Egyptian authorities are threatening to dismantle one of IFEX's members in Egypt, the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR), for having accepted unauthorised foreign funds to hold a regional conference on the right to access information, report EOHR, the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN).

Twenty-six IFEX members protest against lese majeste charges

RSF and 31 other human rights, press freedom and journalists' organisations, including 25 IFEX members, have issued a joint appeal to the Thai government to ensure that no one ever goes to jail for lese majeste - insulting the monarchy.

Jailed Chinese writer receives top PEN honour

Liu Xiaobo A Chinese writer who has been in jail since December for authoring a petition for human rights has been awarded this year's PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award.
