Burma

Aung San Suu Kyi on trial for breaking restrictions

Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was taken from her home last week and put in Insein Prison on a charge of breaching the conditions of her house arrest order. ARTICLE 19 and Human Rights Watch are demanding that the international community pressure the Burmese military government not to continue Suu Kyi's 13-year detention.

Triumph for journalists as government agrees to amend media law

Kenyan journalists protested in Nairobi last year against the Communications (Amendment) Bill 2008 Following a concerted campaign, the Kenyan government has published amendments to the Communications Act, which will delete a controversial clause that allows the government to raid broadcasting stations, report the Africa Free Media Foundation, the Media Institute and local news reports.

Michel Kilo released

Michel Kilo Journalist Michel Kilo was released from prison last week after completing a three-year prison sentence, but was immediately detained for five days, reports Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

A Cuban journalist has been sentenced to three years in jail on charges of "disrespect for authority," report the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the Writers in Prison Committee of International PEN (WiPC), the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) and Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

The Kyber Union of Journalists and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) are appealing to fellow media and press freedom organisations to raise emergency funds for Pakistan's journalists who have fled Swat Valley.

IRFS launches 24-hour media hotline in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani organisations the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS) and the Media Rights Institute have set up a 24-hour hotline for journalists and media groups in distress, especially those facing court cases or criminal defamation suits.
