Highlights from the Global Forum on Freedom of Expression

Winners of the IPA prize: OLPEC founders Neziha Rjiba, Mohamed Talbi and Sihem Bensedrine More than 500 journalists, writers, activists and artists from over 103 countries converged in Oslo, Norway last week for the Global Forum on Freedom of Expression (GFFE). ARTICLE 19 and CIHRS condemn attacks on UN Special Rapporteur

Frank La Rue, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Freedom of Opinion and Expression UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Freedom of Opinion and Expression, Frank La Rue, has come under fire by governments attempting to erode the independence of the Special Rapporteur and, more broadly, all Special Procedures mandate-holders at the Human Rights Council, say ARTICLE 19 and the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS).

Radio director assassinated in busy market

Mukhtar Mohamed Hirabe was killed on 7 June A radio director was shot in the head five times while strolling through a bustling Mogadishu market with a colleague on 7 June, report the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).

Two reporters shot dead in unrelated incidents

Two Filipino journalists have been killed in separate attacks in the past week - one while covering a drug bust and the other after finishing his morning show at a local radio station.

U.S. journalists sentenced to 12 years hard labour

Euna Lee, left, and Laura Ling U.S. journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling have been sentenced to 12 years of hard labour in North Korea after a closed-door trial from 4 to 8 June, report the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the International Press Institute (IPI) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

Guatemala

Journalist killed by unidentified assailant

TV reporter Marco Antonio Estrada was shot down in Chiquimula, Guatemala just as he was stepping off his motorcycle on 8 June, report the Journalists' Observatory of the Centro de Reportes Informativos sobre Guatemala (CERIGUA), the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

Awards / Palestine

MADA, one of IFEX's newest members, wins PEC award

On 4 June, the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) and the Mexican Ambassador to the UN, Luis Alfonso De Alba, were jointly honoured in Geneva with the first Press Emblem Campaign (PEC) Award for the Protection of Journalists.
