Honduras

Another round of violence against the media post-coup

Nearly two months after Honduras's left-leaning president Manuel Zelaya was kidnapped from the presidential palace and expelled from the country, journalists and activists continue to pay the price, say the Comité por la Libre Expresión (C-Libre), the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) and other IFEX members.

Russia / Chechnya (Russia)

Murders in south suggest systemic rights violations

The bullet-riddled bodies of a Chechen activist and her husband were found in the trunk of their car in Grozny last week, a day after they were kidnapped. Meanwhile, in neighbouring Dagestan, a well-known investigative journalist was killed. IFEX members ARTICLE 19, Human Rights Watch and others say that the violence is a sign that in Russia today, especially in Chechnya, independent voices continue to be ruthlessly silenced.

Iraq

Journalists stage unprecedented protest against free expression restrictions

In an unprecedented action, hundreds of Iraqi journalists, academics, rights activists and parliamentarians took to Baghdad's streets last week to protest moves by the government to stifle free expression, say Reporters Without Borders (RSF), and the Journalistic Freedom Observatory (JFO), which organised the demonstration.

Tunisia

Government allies seize control of journalists' union

The Tunisian government has "overthrown" the independent board of the journalists' union in Tunisia, report the Observatoire pour la liberté de la presse, d'édition et de création (OLPEC), the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) and other IFEX members.

New broadcasting act keeps public media under state control

Parliament passed a bill earlier this month that turns the state-run Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service (SLBS) into a public service broadcaster, but the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) says the President will still have undue powers.
