Journalist freed; another killed in raid

Journalist Sayed Perwiz Kambakhsh imprisoned for downloading an article on women's rights was secretly pardoned by President Hamid Karzai There was good news and bad news coming out of Afghanistan this past week. After being sentenced to 20 years in prison, journalist Sayed Perwiz Kambakhsh was secretly pardoned by President Hamid Karzai weeks ago, report the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the International Press Institute (IPI).

Journalists imprisoned on charges of sedition have been released on presidential pardon Six Gambian journalists imprisoned on charges ranging from defamation to "seditious publication" were released on 3 September on a presidential pardon, report the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) and other IFEX members.

Journalist released from detention after being fined for wearing pants

Journalist Lubna Ahmed Hussein fined for wearing pants has been released from detention A Sudanese journalist was convicted on 7 September of "sensational dressing" and jailed for wearing trousers, report the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) and the International Press Institute (IPI). Protesters in support of Lubna Ahmed Hussein were beaten outside the court and reporters barred from the proceedings.

Filmmaker Christian Poveda was shot to death after spending years documenting the lives of gangs A filmmaker who spent years documenting El Salvador's most violent gangs was shot dead last week, say the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the International Press Institute (IPI) and Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
