Iran
Iranian authorities are carrying out a lethal campaign to silence independent journalists and critics, report the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Reporters Without Borders (RSF). Two Iranian netizens and human rights activists are possibly facing the death penalty. RSF has accused the Iranian regime of crimes against humanity.
Sri Lanka
Arrests and intimidation of Sri Lankan journalists continue in a post-election crackdown, especially on critics who sided with the opposition, report the Free Media Movement (FMM) and other IFEX members. Authorities have detained and questioned many journalists, blocked websites and expelled a foreign journalist, fostering a climate of fear.
China

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has released a new report that highlights the arbitrary manner in which Chinese authorities forbid reporting on numerous issues, manipulating the flow of information. The Chinese media are routinely pummelled with restrictions, leaving very little room for independent news gathering.

A Mexican editor was shot in the face and killed on 29 January, report the Center for Journalism and Public Ethics (CEPET), the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and other IFEX members.
Canada
Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) has launched a campaign to monitor free expression violations related to the Winter Olympics. CJFE's Olympic Watch is highlighting recent incidents where the protection of the Olympic brand has led to threats to free expression.
International
Abusive governments worldwide are fully engaged in attacks on human rights defenders, organisations and institutions in order to silence critics, says a new report by Human Rights Watch. The 612-page report, "World Report: 2010," summarises major human rights trends in more than 90 nations and territories worldwide.
Africa
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its affiliate, the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ), have released a new report detailing threats to African journalists from politicians, militias and religious extremists.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has teamed up with Deutsche Welle, Germany's international broadcaster, for the Best Of The Blogs: an international weblog competition with a special focus on journalistic weblogs. Internet users can nominate exceptional blogs in 11 languages and 17 categories. There is a special category for blogs that defend freedom of expression, sponsored by RSF.
