IFEX unveils special website for World Press Freedom Day

As Washington D.C. plays host to official 2011 World Press Freedom Day celebrations, IFEX kick starts 3 May with a special website dedicated to IFEX member activities around the day, around the world. Check it out here.

Libya

IFEX members honour photojournalists who lost their lives last week

War photographers Chris Hondros and Tim Hetherington were killed last week while covering the fight between pro-Gaddafi forces and rebels for control of the Libyan city of Misrata. Two other journalists, Guy Martin, a Briton working for the photo agency Panos, and Michael Christopher Brown, a photojournalist for Corbis, were both seriously injured by the same mortar fire. IFEX members paid tribute to the journalists, and are regularly updating news on the free expression situation in Libya.

United Arab Emirates

Activists arrested for opposing government

Earlier this month, the United Arab Emirates followed in the footsteps of its neighbours and arrested at least five rights activists who have been demanding political reforms over the Internet. Egypt-based rights organisations, including IFEX members Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) and Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS), have banded together to demand the release of the activists, while Human Rights Watch is appealing to international organisations to pull out of UAE.

Bolivia / El Salvador

Journalist found dead in Bolivia; cameraman gunned down in El Salvador

Two journalists were killed in two relatively safe countries in Latin America this past week. A journalist who went missing on 19 April in Bolivia was found dead two days later, report IFEX interim member Asociación Nacional de la Prensa (ANP) and other IFEX members, while a cameraman in El Salvador was gunned down near the capital on Monday, report the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Celebrate World Press Freedom Day on Facebook

For those of us not able to make it to a World Press Freedom Day celebration, IFEX members have come up with ways to take part in the festivities through Facebook. Post a World Press Freedom Day banner on your wall. Vote for your favourite depiction of free expression. And check UNESCO's official World Press Freedom Day page for the latest updates on what's happening this year in Washington, D.C.
