IFEX Communiqué Vol 20, No 19
Russia

Two ultra-nationalists have been convicted and sentenced to long prison terms for the January 2009 double murder of human rights lawyer Stanislav Markelov and "Novaya Gazeta" trainee reporter Anastasia Baburova - a landmark victory against impunity in Russia, say the Glasnost Defence Foundation (GDF), the Center for Journalism in Extreme Situations (CJES) and other IFEX members.
Bahrain

Even as the King of Bahrain promises to end the state of emergency he imposed in mid-March to quell anti-government demonstrations, journalists, rights activists and opposition leaders continue to be arrested, with dozens of them hastily tried. Forty-two IFEX members and 15 partners are appealing to the international community to end their silence and demand that the Bahraini government take action against the rights abuses.
Pakistan
An investigative journalist who often wrote about militants in Pakistan's Tribal Areas was killed last night in an apparently targeted bomb blast in Peshawar, report Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) and other IFEX members.
Peru / Brazil
Two journalists were gunned down in the Americas on World Press Freedom Day (3 May), a stark reminder of the dangers journalists face to keep us informed, say the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), the International Press Institute (IPI) and other IFEX members.
Ethiopia / World Press Freedom Day
Officials in Ethiopia celebrated World Press Freedom Day by hijacking a local UNESCO-sponsored 3 May event, putting up pro-government journalists as speakers and cancelling independent journalists who were scheduled to speak, reports the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
